What Is It?
The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) require Social Workers who have been out of practice for between 2 – 5 years to complete 30 days additional study before they re-register as a Social Worker. GMSWA is keen to support social workers to return to practice within Greater Manchester. The University of Manchester and the University of Salford are running ‘Return to Social Work’ programmes in conjunction with GMSWA.
Who Can Apply?
The ‘Return to Social Work’ programme is open to any qualified Social Workers who are returning to practice after a break of 2 to 5 years and seeking re-registration with HCPC. For social workers who live within the Greater Manchester region and / or have an employment history of working as a social worker within Greater Manchester and intend to seek work in this area after re-registration, this course is FREE. Applicants who do not meet these criteria are welcome to apply too. The cost of the programme is £1,000 for people who do not meet the GMSWA criteria to support funding.
What Will I Gain?
The programme consists of:
⇒ 3 days refresher training - You will receive updates on social work practice, particularly on legislation and safeguarding practices. Simulated learning will also be used to refresh and enhance your interviewing skills .
⇒ 10 days supervised practice placement - You will have the opportunity to return to a practice setting to re-familiarise yourself with hands on practice within a local authority or other statutory team .
⇒ 2 days bespoke sessions - You will gain wisdom from experienced social work practitioners on areas you identify as your learning needs. Re-registration, preparing for employment and your future CPD plans will be discussed and consolidated .

Dates for University of Salford ‘Return to Social Work’ Programme
Refresher days (taught): 25th, 26th & 27th February 2019 Venue: University of Salford, School of Health and Society, Salford, M6 6UP
Supervised practice placement - 10 days to be completed between; 28th February & 22nd March 2019
Refresher days (taught): 25th & 26th March 2019 Venue: University of Salford, School of Health and Society, Salford, M6 6UP
15 days private study will be evidenced in addition to the above to meet HCPC requirements. This can be completed independently or guidance can be given.
