The Avenue Professional Development Programme

Be tutored online by Neil Thompson! The Avenue Professional Development Programme is an online learning community based on principles of self-directed learning and geared towards developing critically reflective practice. Members get access to a constantly growing library of multimedia learning resources, discussion forums (with tutorial input from Neil), an e-portfolio to record, consolidate and verify learning, and much more. A year's subscription costs just £10 per month (only £5 per month for SWU members).
Self-directed learning is where you decide what you want to learn and how you want to learn it. This programme provides a supportive community of fellow learners plus expert tutorial support from one of social work's most well-known and highly respected authors.
Participating in the programme provides a strong and accessible point of reference for my own personal learning needs. The quality of materials, supported by a dynamic community of other individual learners, provides a real incentive. I feel I have applied my own learning and work-based preoccupations into tangible outcomes, in ways that more traditional face-to-face 'training' hasn't enabled. I have been challenged, and helped to see the value of a learning model that I am responsible for and that, consequently, I get more out of. I would recommend it for individuals, for teams and organisations. It made me consider the comparative outlay for 'training' events that appeared to do little more than meet agency requirements against the benefits of seeing the genuine pleasure of a staff group taking responsibility for their work-based learning. I genuinely think that since becoming a member of the Programme my professional confidence has further increased which is great, especially when faced with particularly challenging situations at work. I feel better equipped in a multi-agency context, because the other members have helped increase my awareness and understanding of the various roles within the people professions, which I have found especially useful. Joining in the seminar forum discussions is what I like and there are plenty of opportunities to do this. I have found the atmosphere to be warm and welcoming from the first day I came on board. There is mutual respect for each other’s contributions and suggestions. It is brilliant to mix with newly qualified professionals as well as very experienced professionals at either end of the career path – there is such a rich mix which creates just the right environment for those with an inquiring mind. Dr Neil Thompson provides guidance and a wealth of professional and considerable academic knowledge on the APDP. I would highly recommend joining the APDP to further develop your professional practice experience – this is such a great opportunity not to be missed. JC
The Avenue Professional Development Programme provides a unique and valuable opportunity to dialogue and network with fellow professions across the globe. Participating in this learning community has expanded my understanding of the commonalities, the differences, the strengths, and the challenges that are faced by human services providers around the world. It has also given me the opportunity to learn from those with who are more experienced in areas of the field that I am new to, and to become more reflected and grounded in areas of the field that I know well. For any people professional who would enjoy the benefit of connecting with colleagues at an international level, and being invited to reflect on their practice in the virtual company of others who are passionate about their work, this is an unparalleled programme to be a part of!
