MSc Applied Social Work Practice Continuous Professional Development

Intake: April

AIMS OF MODULE:

  • To critically examine the legal and social construction of risk and vulnerability: implications for social work practice
  • To critically explore the inter-relationship between concepts of risk, data collection and assessment: decision-making which protects individuals
  • To develop user-focused communication skills, working with difference: empowering practice
  • To examine the importance of Inquiries and Serious Case Reviews: learning the lessons within organisational cultures

LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT OUTCOMES:

  • Build upon professional practice which already exists. Social workers are part of larger systems (economic, political, and structural) and these impact upon how social workers can carry out assessment and intervention plans.
  • Acknowledge professional experience and enhance a critical appraisal of the dominant professional approaches (safeguarding) and their relevance for practice, decision-making and intervention.
  • Demonstration of the importance and impact of research and evidence through Inquiries and Serious Case Reviews.
  • Evaluation of the social work role through critical reflective analysis

ASSESSMENT: THIS MODULE IS ASSESSED BY AN ASSIGNMENT OF 5,000 WORDS

You will be required to write a 5,000 word assignment. The context will be a current/past case scenario which is relevant to your role within the organisation. The assignment will need to justify the use of legislation and highlight ethical dilemmas and the decision-making process, within the context of safeguarding an adult. A reflective analysis of the outcome(s) of the decision-making and intervention(s) will also be required.      Individual tutorials will be available and formative feedback will be given.

This module forms part of the MSc Applied Social Work Practice CPD programme.
